Born: 12 June 1996 (Caloto, Colombia)
Colombia international defender Davinson Sanchez joined us from Ajax in August, 2017.
Davinson once again played an important role in our 2021/22 campaign, making 32 appearances in all competitions, including 23 in the Premier League as we finished fourth and qualified for the UEFA Champions League. Notably, he started the vital final three matches following injury to Cristian Romero - we kept three clean sheets in beating Arsenal, Burnley and Norwich City. He also found the net twice - including a huge injury time winner at Watford on New Year's Day.
At the end of 2021/22, Davinson had moved up to 181 appearances in all competitions for the Club.
The defender made his professional debut for Atletico Nacional aged 17 in his homeland of Colombia and was part of their Copa Libertadores winning side in 2016.
He moved to Ajax in June, 2016, and made 47 appearances for the Dutch side, scoring seven goals. He won Ajax’s ‘Rinus Michels’ Player of the Year Award in his only season at the Club, which was previously won by Jan Vertonghen in 2012 and Rafael van der Vaart in 2002.
Upon moving to Spurs, he made his debut as a late substitute against Burnley in our third game of the 2017/18 campaign, but quickly established himself as a regular starter throughout the remainder of a highly impressive first season in our colours.
He made 31 appearances in the Premier League, a further two in the FA Cup and was the only player to start all eight of our games in the UEFA Champions League over the course of that campaign.
The 2018/19 season saw him start 22 games in the Premier League in addition to making one substitute appearance, while he opened his goalscoring account for the Club in a 3-1 home win over Leicester City at Wembley in February, 2019. In Europe, he started seven games and made one substitute appearance on our run to the Champions League Final, while six appearances in the two domestic cups took his overall tally to 37 matches played in all competitions. In 2019/20, Davinson featured in 39 of our 52 matches in all competitions, including 27 starts in the Premier League.
In 2020/21, he featured in 33 of our 58 matches in all competitions, including 19 in the Premier League. He started 10 of our Europa League matches, and scored twice in a thrilling FA Cup tie at Everton that ended in a 5-4 loss in February. He then played in all of Colombia's seven matches in the Copa America, as they suffered the heartbreak of losing on penalties to Argentina in the semi-final. Colombia beat Peru to finish third in Brazil.
Having represented Colombia at Under-17, Under-20 and Under-23 levels, Davinson made his senior international debut in November, 2016, and was part of his nation's squads at the 2018 FIFA World Cup and 2019 Copa America. He helped Colombia reach the semi-finals of the 2021 Copa America, and at the end of 2021/22, he had 48 senior caps to his name.
