Martha Thomas has been named your HSBC Player of the Match after she opened her account for the season in our 1-0 win at Bristol City on Sunday afternoon.
With her goal separating the two sides in the southwest and earning our spot in the quarter-final of the Subway Women’s League Cup, Martha claimed the majority of your votes to claim her first award of the campaign.
Handed her first start of the term under Martin Ho, having previously made seven appearances prior to the trip at Robins High Performance Centre, the forward did have the ball in the back of the net in the first half as she reacted quickest to Olivia Holdt’s shot being saved to convert on the rebound, but it was disallowed for her being offside.
However, she wasn’t to be denied in the second period, as just 16 seconds from the restart, the Scotland international guided home Matilda Vinberg’s cross to net her first goal of the season and give us a 1-0 lead in the contest.
We just needed a point from our clash with the Robins to progress in the competition and Martha’s strike was enough to earn us the win against the Women’s Super League 2 side, as we topped our group with eight points from three games.
