Sonny: "I wanted to do something special - today, we did it"

Approaching 10 years at the club, 454 appearances, captain, icon - Heung-Min Son was still taking it all in as we spoke to him after our UEFA Europa League triumph in Bilbao on Wednesday night.

He now goes down as a trophy-winning captain, standing proudly alongside the likes of Danny Blanchflower, Alan Mullery, Steve Perryman and Ledley King.

Brennan Johnson's goal after 42 minutes was enough as a resolute defensive display kept United at bay - the closest they came to levelling saw Micky van de Ven produce one of the great goalline clearances from Rasmus Højlund in the second half.

Our fourth European trophy - three UEFA Cup/Europa Leagues (1972, 1984, 2025), plus the European Cup Winners' Cup (1963) - and a place in next season's Champions League all in the bag on a night we'll never forget at Estadio de San Mamés.

"We did it!" beamed Sonny. "I wanted to do something special. Today, we did something special that the people will never forget. It's such a special moment. Let's celebrate!

"I never doubted it. We had some tough games, but I always believed we could win this tournament. Today is the day we did it. Credit to all the boys, they were outstanding from day one. Maybe not the next captain! But the boys were so respectful, so kind, I'm lucky to have such an amazing group behind me, supporting me. I'm the happiest guy in the world.

"I will never forget this. I scored the first goal in the stadium, captain of this club, win the Europa League... what can I say. These memories. In 10 years, I've done special things that I will never, ever forget. I'm so happy."
