Ange on our legends: “They are our inspiration”

Ange Postecoglou paid his respects to the legends who formed a guard of honour to greet the team back from Bilbao with the UEFA Europa League trophy on Sunday.

What a moment as Heung-Min Son was welcomed by the likes of all-time greats Steve Perryman, Pat Jennings, Martin Chivers and Graham Roberts who, in Steve’s absence through suspension, lifted the trophy the last time we won it back in 1984. How apt also that Keith Burkinshaw, manager of that 1984 team, who also landed the FA Cup in 1981 and 1982, was also there to meet Ange.

“It was brilliant,” said Ange. “All these guys have been really supportive of me, they’ve all reached out at different times, and they are our inspiration. I kept talking to the players and showing them the photos in the hallways, photos of all the guys who have achieved what this club has been craving for so many years. They were the inspiration - now this group of players gets the privilege of joining them.”
