The Club has been supporting its local hospital - North Middlesex University Hospital - during National Blood Week to raise awareness of the urgent need for blood donors this summer.
Club ambassador Ledley King undertook a tour of North Mid alongside representatives from the hospital, including members of our NHS Spurs Official Supporters’ Club, to draw focus to crucial blood donation initiatives.
Ledley visited laboratories, the phlebotomy department, and the haematology day unit as part of the hospital’s “journey of blood” experience. Our former captain discussed with NHS staff the need to raise awareness of the issue of the life-saving impact of blood donation and the critical need for more donors, especially from Black, Asian, and mixed heritage communities.
There is currently an urgent need for more O negative donors, which are vital in emergencies, and for Black donors, who are far more likely to have the Ro blood type needed to treat sickle cell disease.
Today, fellow Ambassador Ossie Ardiles undertook the ‘What’s your blood type’ test during his visit to the hospital, which involves a finger prick that collects a small sample of blood and provides an instant result of the individual’s blood type. Only four drops of blood are required to provide the information, which can then be used to inform who could use that blood type in potential donations. Ergin Erbil, leader of Enfield Council, was also present during Ossie's visit and discussed the importance of the initiative for our local community with our former midfielder.
The Club is a long-standing supporter of North Mid, which is part of the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust, and is donating 4,000 Spurs baby comforters to the hospital for newborns this summer – the first delivery of which were made by Ledley to the maternity unit this week.
