The Spurs Seven - Johnson joins exclusive club with scoring run

Tue 15 October 2024, 15:15|Tottenham Hotspur

Brennan Johnson has joined an exclusive group of only seven players to score in six consecutive competitive games for the Club since the inception of league football in 1908.

Opening his run with the dramatic late winner to send us through in the Carabao Cup at Coventry City on 18 September, Brennan hasn’t stopped scoring since with goals in three Premier League games on the spin and in both Europa League victories to take his tally to six in all competitions.

The 23-year-old is making goalscoring look easy on his remarkable run but our history books tell us that this feat is far from straightforward with only six players – just one of whom is in our top five all-time goalscorers – before him netting six in six in all competitions in Spurs history.

All of Johnson's six strikes in all competitions this season

What is more, spanning the 116 years since our first participation in competitive league action, only two players have gone one better to score seven in a row and just one has scored in six straight games on two separate seasons.

Let’s take a look at the magnificent seven…

1 - 1919/20 – Bert Bliss (Dec 27 – Jan 31) - Legacy Number #201

After four seasons participating in the London Football Combination friendly competition during the Great War years, league football made its return as we ended Division Two as champions to bounce straight back to Division One in Peter McWilliam’s first spell in charge. Of our 102 goals scored across a 42-game season, Bert was instrumental with 31 of those in an ever-present campaign in the league – in other words: Bliss-full.

27 December 1919 – 4-0 Barnsley – Division Two
3 January 1920 – 2-1 Stockport County – Division Two
10 January – 4-1 Bristol Rovers – FA Cup
17 January – 2-0 Stockport County – Division Two
24 January – 1-1 Huddersfield Town – Division Two
31 January – 4-0 West Stanley – FA Cup

2 - 1935/36 – Johnny Morrison (Oct 12 – Nov 16) - #315

Competing in the second tier following two seasons in the top division, the 1935/36 season brought about a high-scoring campaign where the team registered the second-highest goals for tally in the division (91) under new manager Jack Tresadern. Morrison bagged 25 in 32 league appearances, adding three more in the FA Cup, and his six-game run was different in that all his goals came in the league.

12 October 1935 – 5-1 Burnley x2 (h) – Division Two
19 October – 4-0 Bradford x2 (h) - Division Two
26 October – 1-4 Leicester City (a) - Division Two
2 November – 7-2 Swansea Town x2 (h) - Division Two
9 November – 2-2 West Ham (a) x2 - Division Two
16 November – 4-3 Bury (h) - Division Two

3 - 1983/84 – Steve Archibald (Sep 24 – Oct 22) – seven in a row - #526

Now an established top-flight side, our eighth and final season under legendary manager Keith Burkinshaw ended with European glory as we added the UEFA Cup to his collection following consecutive FA Cup successes in 1980/81 and 1981/82. Up front, Archibald was a flying Scotsman! Not only did he become the first to score seven on the spin to eclipse his predecessors but also ended as top scorer with 28 goals in 49 appearances in a memorable final season at the Club before his move to Barcelona.

24 September 1983 – 3-2 Watford (a) – Division One
28 September – 8-0 Drogheda United (h) – UEFA Cup
2 October – 2-1 Nottingham Forest (h) – Division One
5 October – 3-1 Lincoln City (h) – League Cup
15 October – 3-2 Wolverhampton Wanderers x2 (a) – Division One
19 October – 4-2 Feyenoord (h) x2 – UEFA Cup
22 October – 1-0 Birmingham City (a) – Division One

4 - 1984/85 - Garth Crooks (Dec 7 – Jan 12) - seven in a row - #527

They say you wait ages for a London bus and then two come at once. Well, following the 48-year wait from Morrison to Archibald, Crooks stepped up to match his former strike partner’s record of seven just the following season with a festive goal fest that brought six of his 10 league goals during his joint-record streak that term.

15 December 1984 – 2-1 Watford (a) – Division One
22 December – 2-1 Norwich City (a) - Division One
26 December – 2-2 West Ham (h) - Division One
29 December – 2-0 Sunderland (h) - Division One
1 January 1985 – 2-1 Arsenal (a) - Division One
5 January – 1-1 Charlton Athletic (h) – FA Cup
12 January – 2-2 Queens Park Rangers (a) – Division One

5 - 1995/96 - Teddy Sheringham (Sep 9 – Oct 4) - #599

In the fourth edition of the reformed and rebranded top flight, Teddy became our first player to achieve six on the bounce in the Premier League era as the division changed to a 20-team format for the very first time. Now a 38-game season, the forward didn’t miss a match across all competitions under Gerry Francis and top scored with 16 league goals (24 overall).

9 September 1995 – 2-1 Leeds United (h) – Premier League
16 September – 3-1 Sheffield Wednesday (a) x2 – Premier League
20 September – 4-0 Chester City (h) – Coca-Cola Cup
25 September – 3-2 QPR (a) x2 – Premier League
30 September – 3-1 Wimbledon (h) x2 – Premier League
4 October – 3-1 Chester City (a) x2 – Coca-Cola Cup

6 - 2015/16 & 2018/19 - Harry Kane - #767

Our first and only player to achieve six on the spin across two separate seasons, the Club’s record goalscorer first did so with nine goals in six games in 2015/16 and later went on to claim the Premier League golden boot with 25 goals in an ever-present league season under Mauricio Pochettino.

25 October 2015 – 5-1 Bournemouth (a) x3 – Premier League
2 November – 3-1 Aston Villa (h) – Premier League
5 November – 2-1 Anderlecht (h) – Europa League
8 November – 1-1 Arsenal (a) – Premier League
22 November – 4-1 West Ham x2 (h) – Premier League
26 November – 1-0 Qarabag (a) – Europa League

‘H’ then repeated the feat three seasons later when he delivered the same outcome but this time across three competitions during a busy Christmas schedule.

23 December 2018 – 6-2 Everton (a) x2 – Premier League
26 December – 5-0 Bournemouth (h) – Premier League
29 December – 1-3 Wolves (h) – Premier League
1 January 2019 – 3-0 Cardiff City (a) – Premier League
4 January – 7-0 Tranmere Rovers (a) – FA Cup
8 January – 1-0 Chelsea (h) – Carabao Cup

7 - 2024/25 – Brennan Johnson* - #878

The latest player inducted into this goalscoring hall of fame, the Welshman made it seven in seven on a personal note with a goal for Wales against Iceland during the recent international break and returns to Hotspur Way with the opportunity to add to his current scoring streak.

18 September 2024 – 2-1 Coventry City – Carabao Cup
21 September – 3-1 Brentford – Premier League
