Leading from the back: A league-high 11 goals from defenders

Mon 08 April 2024, 17:00|Tottenham Hotspur

We have spread the goals around the side so far this season and that has seen our defenders flourish in front of goal.

Having scored 65 goals in the Premier League already this term with 31 games played, our second best goals per game return (2.09) in a league campaign since 1992  (the 2016/17 return of 2.26 goals per game remains our best), we have certainly been prolific in front of goal this term and, notably, those goals have been spread around the team as we have had 15 different goalscorers this year.

And, incredibly, of those 15 different goalscorers, six have been defenders with our backline contributing to 11 goals for us this term - no team has had more goals scored by defenders in the league than that.

Watch - Our 11 goals scored by defenders

Our ability to share around the goals was noticeable from our very first league outing under Ange Postecoglou as both of our goals in our opening day draw with Brentford were scored by defenders with the first headed in by Cristian Romero before Emerson Royal fired in from range to earn us a 2-2 draw in west London.

Since then, Micky van de Ven, Destiny Udogie, Ben Davies and Pedro Porro have all got in on the act with their own strikes in Lilywhite.

And add to that Pour inverted full-backs Pedro and Destiny have provided seven and three assists respectively, it means defenders have contributed to 19 goals for us this term*

Defensive Premier League goal contributions in 2023/24

Pedro Porro - 1 goal, 7 assists

Destiny Udogie - 2 goals, 3 assists

Cristian Romero - 4 goals

Micky van de Ven - 2 goals

Ben Davies - 1 goal

*Two of Pedro Porro's assists created goals for other defenders (Romero vs West Ham - December, 2023, and Davies vs Brighton - December, 2023).
