FA Cup third round stats after Pompey win

Mon 09 January 2023, 14:30|Tottenham Hotspur

Victory over Portsmouth on Saturday extended our current sequence of only losing once in the third round of the Emirates FA Cup since 2005/06.

That equates to one defeat in our last 22 matches since suffering a 3-2 reverse at Leicester City on 8 January, 2006. Arsenal were the team to dent our run in the third round in the 2013/14 campaign with a 2-0 win at the Emirates on 4 January, 2014.

We first entered the FA Cup in 1894/95, and we've now played 141 matches in the third round of the competition going all the way back to our first run to the third round in 1898/99, where we lost at Stoke. As a Southern League club in those days, we played nine matches to reach that stage, starting from the third qualifying round! Two years later, 1901, we'd create history as the first non-league club to win the FA Cup - a record that remains to this day.

We've only lost five third round ties since the launch of the Premier League era 30 years ago, 1992/93, and taking into account our replay loss at Newcastle in the 1999/2000 season was played in December, 1999, we've only lost three times in the third round this century!
